About my approach (style) to therapy…

Mental health recovery and wellness are unique to each one of us. My approach includes considering the whole of one’s self, and focusing on maximizing recovery through person-centered planning and trauma informed care cognitive behavioral therapy. I use motivational interviewing in each session, helping identify strengths, insight and drawing out resilience. We will first get to know each other, set goals, create a plan and then work towards maximizing wellness and reaching your goals.

About my background and training…

I have been practicing as a licensed professional counselor for eleven years in the state of Wisconsin providing in person counseling. I have been working in the helping profession for over twenty years. Prior to working as a counselor, I was an advocate for families, an employment specialist for a community resource program and a benefit specialist for our local Aging and Disability Centers. When I made the decision to go on for my Master’s Degree, it was so I could pursue my passion in helping others and learning more about the mental health recovery model I was starting to hear about. I chose the Southern New Hampshire University Master’s program based on the focus of recovery and community mental health services, aligning with my philosophy that wellness is personal and rarely does the medical model of treating mental health work without community counseling. I attended Southern New Hampshire University from 2005 to 2007. I earned my Graduate Certificate in Integrated Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse in January 2007, and completed my Masters of Science in Community Mental Health in May 2008. I have been working as a counselor since 2010, and when the Covid-19 pandemic launched me into telehealth, both as a patient and a counselor, I found that really amazing work can happen through this incredible, and convenient, platform.

A Little About Me…

The Midwest Coulee Region in Wisconsin is where I call home. I grew up in the country in a small town on a very big hill. My summers were spent reading, wandering the woods I lived in, rolling down the hills, and catching fireflies at night. My childhood dream was to move to a big city, where I could walk to a library. Now, I do indeed live by a library in a town of about 52,000. Now maybe not the biggest city ever, but it is just right for me! I am so lucky that I live where three rivers meet, the Wisconsin, Black and Mississippi Rivers. Endless highways of water that will take me to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa all in a few hours. My summers are now spent at the library (yes, I still love to read), and on a boat going up and down the river trying to catch as many sunsets as I can. Additionally, everyday I practice what I believe in and work on my own wellness! Reading, boating and sunsets are indeed part of my plan, as is baking as much as I can eat or get others to eat, walking, eating and drinking as well as I can and forgiving myself when I haven’t. As a counselor, I also believe I must use counseling when I feel my own wellness slipping away and I draw on telehealth to meet my own needs. I am excited to share my passion for wellness and recovery through teletherapy, if the time is right for you!
